Criteria Comparison
1. Does the service work on multiple computers?
Yes, you are able to use a number of computers. However, the service plans are divided up based on the amount of GBs. Therefore, you do have a potential limiting factor before having to move up to a larger GB plan.
2. Does the service have the ability to synchronize files between multiple computers?
Yes, you can synchronize your files between multiple computers. It even works if you are using a PC and Mac. This is actually one of the strongest selling points for their service as they are ahead of just about all the other companies in this area.
3. Does the service provide you with access to past editions?
Yes, you have the ability to access past editions of files as you can look in past backups. The service stores the five previous files that are backed up of each document.
4. Does the service have the ability to backup specific files first or separately?
Yes, you are able to select which files you want to backup first. You can also select which files you want to have backed up or not backed up as well.
5. What level of encryption does the service provide?
Sugarsync uses a basic level of encryption. They use 128 bit AES Encryption. This is the same standard used as Carbonite; however, it is not as strong as a number of other service providers like LiveDrive, Mozy, or MyPCBackup. Mozy has the strongest encryption out of all these companies.
6. Can it support a Mac or PC? What mobile devices can it support?
Sugarsync works on PC Computers that run Windows 7, Vista, or XP. In addition, it runs on Mac computers that run the OS X operating system.
SugarSync works on a large number of mobile devices including iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, Android, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, and Symbian devices.

Personal Review
The SugarSync Online Backup service was easy to setup and use. To download the software and get the first backup running only took a couple of minutes. It allowed you the option of choosing which files you wanted backed up. I did a full backup and the process took about 33 minutes to complete a full backup for me. It did not give an estimation of how long the process would take but its speed was comparable to the other services I have used with the same hard drive size.
The synchronization feature is the big selling point for this software and it does impress. It is also pretty easy to figure out and they help you along the way. This option will help all those who often have to do some work at home or are on the road a lot for their work and will need remote access to their home and/or work computers.
I should also point out that their support and help information was very helpful. They are very illustrative and easy to follow. I did not find that I really needed this information but when I took a look at them, they were easy to follow with their step by step instructions.
